OUT-of-STYLE: A Modern Perspective of How, Why and When Vintage Fashions Evolved Reviews
This is a really charming and informative book, written in a friendly, chatty style with lots of anecdotes (the author worked in Hollywood for many years as a costume designer, one of her premier credits being Ken Murray's "Blackout" vaudeville revue of the 1940's starring gorgeous "dumb-blonde" actress Marie Wilson). More recently, she worked as a staff member for Ancestry magazine, where she got the idea for this book as a resource for genealogists and family historians looking for information on the clothes their ancestors wore in old family photographs. The book is of value far beyond genealogy, though, with lots of appeal to fashion and social historians and just plain fans of vintage fashion.
I originally found this book a couple of weeks ago at a public library. The book's intended for people doing ancestry research and using clothing and hair as a way to date photography. Betty's book also reads as like a CliffNotes book, summing up periods in concise, tight summaries. I found this book to be useful as an artist that was researching clothing in the 1910s. I found the book fascinating enough to read it from cover-to-cover. Betty's book is a true labor of love and it she eloquently shares all her years of fashion experience outstanding book. I enjoyed the book so much that I bought a copy for my permanent collection. If you can afford it, consider getting the hardcover edition. It's worth the investment!
As a genealogist, I found this book very useful in dating an old photograph that was in my grandmother's photo album. The author includes fashion history which gives you some understanding of the times. "Drawers" which were baggy underpants with an open crotch for easy access over a chamber pot or outhouse opened my eyes!
I just learned that I no longer fumble with large buttons and small buttonholes because of the invention of the zipper in 1891. Thanks also to the Prince of Wales for validating the use of the zipper. The Tuxedo was named after a private club in New York --Tuxedo Park. This book "Out-of-Style" is packed with interesting facts, stories and history about clothing we wear. People visiting me pick up this beautiful bound book, which is displayed on my coffee table, just to glance at it but get so engrossed in finding answers to their many questions concerning fashion they can not put it down. This book does not have to be read cover to cover. It is an encyclopedia. You may select the topics of interest to you. I, however, have found no chapters that are of no interest to me. Whether you are a history buff, a fashion designer or are just curious --- "Out-of Style" is a book for you.
I read this book simply because I had seen first hand the dedication and creativity that had gone into it when I had the pleasure of meeting the author, Betty Shubert. She worked tirelessly for years once she set out to put her amazing creativity and memories on paper for others to enjoy. I know nothing of the background of fashion, genealogy, theater, or the many applications for this material, but I admire the qualities that Betty possesses that allowed her to produce such a remarkable work of art and history! Thank you for sharing your life with us Betty!
This is everything I have ever looked for in a book on the history of fashion. I can finally date old photos using this book. It is amazing how this book describes the outfits in my photos to a "T". It is uncanny. I am so glad that I bought it and I know I will be using it for many years. I will try to update with an example soon.
I bought this book to help in my genealogical research. It has added a new dimension to all of the old family pictures I have. The drawings make it much easier to identify styles and make comparisons to the photo I am looking at. The explanations regarding style changes also add some insight into the times in which the people in the photos lived.
Had this book been published years ago it would have kept me working at my desk instead of spending hours in bookstores and photo libraries looking for reference material to accurately time/date costumes for my illustrations. Now, students and professionals will be able to benefit from it. The illustrations are in sequential order, so it is easy to see how and when vintage fashions changed in each decade.
