I read this mostly because I'm interested in doing a cruise, and I enjoy "behind the scenes" books (ie. waitstaff, concierges, etc).

Look, I realize that many are not going to agree with me, but I viewed this as a memoir , from someone who was writing about his personal journey, not as a hard-core documentary in book form. I gave it 4 stars, taking one away for the following:

I love going on cruises, so it was really interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes! I was originally expecting something about what it's like to go on a cruise, but I was not disappointed when I realized it was about the crew. I always wonder about the ship employee hierarchy and what it's like for the employees, especially when we're in port, so this was a really great book to answer all of those questions.

Eh, it was alright. My family and I are getting ready for a cruise so I have some of the stupid questions that the author describes. However, some of the questions he gets are REALLY stupid. I don't think I'd have the patience to explain common sense to some of the peeps a cruis member must interact with.

After reading two other "cruise expose" type books, I was really into the subject, and eager to try Jay's book as well. It did not disappoint! Now knowing a bit more than I did when I actually cruised this summer, I very much enjoyed hearing the similarities and differences of being an "officer" instead of a lowly crew worker. After spending quite a bit of time in the internet cafe on the NCL Epic when I was cruising, I also had a better understanding of the role of the internet expert on a ship. (Thanks Mladen..)So Jay Herring's book was a very enjoyable addition to my enlightenment about cruising. Big bonus to also be able to download at no additional cost, a pdf "single" on cruise tips that will be very helpful in the future. Go to youtube and watch a video with the author Jay Herring! It's fun to match a face with the "character" (no pun intended!) Would have really enjoyed seeing a wedding picture of Jay and his wife since we were rooting for him to find "true love" throughout the book! If you enjoy the inside story of things, or have cruised or are going to try cruising, this is a great book to try.

I did not read the title all the way through. Perhaps if I had I would have never picked this book. I have been reading a number of service industry books lately. This one is the first one that concentrated on how much sex and alcohol the author used and abused. I wonder how much is true. It is frightening to believe so many crew members are drunk all the time. Even the chapters that supposedly talked about his work still prominently focused on how drunk he got and how many women he slept with that I wonder how he got any work done. I read non fiction about service for information and enjoyment to learn how people cope with the people they serve. Not one sentence let alone chapter deal with this. I skimmed the last few chapters to see how it ended. I hope his marriage survives despite his actions on board.
