I grew up in Los Angeles in the 1950s, not exactly in Hollywood but in the next suburb to the east, Los Feliz. This book reminds me so much of the homes of people I knew or my parents knew. None of them were in the movie industry but its influence seeped into LA lifestyles. It was a far more elegant Hollywood than the one we know today. And William Haines was one of its creators. This book is not just for people interested in interior design (though it is a superb reference to the Hollywood Regency style, which is now making a comeback nationally) but also people interested in the film industry and its personalities in Hollywood's golden age. A super book, expensive but worth every penny.

This book is appealing to both those who are fascinated by the movie star world from the glamorous 1920's thru the 1960's. Haines world was a fascinating one with close friends from the movie world such as Joan Crawford. His decorating style was classic and timeless. The book is filled with wonderful illustrations of his work throughout the many years of his long career.

I waited over a year to purchase this book because of the price. I enjoyed examining the room designs and wished there was more information about the decisions Mr Haines made in choosing the objects.
