The Norton Anthology of African American Literature (Third Edition) (Vol. 1) Reviews
I purchased this book as the required text for an undergraduate level Medieval Literature class. So the first thing you should know about it before buying it is that this book contains the least amount of translation from the original text to modern english when possible. So this is probably not a book you should buy for fun unless you're a linguist or an English Medieval Literature enthusiast, it's entirely meant as a reference.
(Please note: this is a review of the edition, not of English Literature - or the seller of my copy.)
This three volume version of the required text for my class is exactly what I needed. The book list told me to get the Norton Anthology of English Literature Volume One, but this version is exactly the same except it is separated into three books. It is organized by century, and I only needed the 16th Century, so it is nice that I don't have to lug around the whole anthology with me. Secondly, this version is significantly less expensive. I notice that all of the page numbers for my reading assignments still line up with this version of the book which is an added bonus! This book arrived quickly through the Amazon Prime shipping method. I would order from this seller again.
Honestly, these Amazon questions about this book are kind of irrelevant because this is a collection of early British literature; there are a lot of stories in this set. I used this as my text for Intro to Early English Literature. We read a lot of stories. I plan on keeping this book set because I am an English Major, and it's great for reference and historical anecdotes. I have had to purchase Norton Anthologies before and my biggest complaint was how big and bulky they are. I would have to carry it to class every day, but not ever need more than 30 pages in any one lecture. That's a lot of weight to my backpack, and I'm not a young student. I've seen students carry multiple large copies around for different English classes! This version though came broken up into three different sections, and I liked it much better because then I could just take the necessary volume to class and not lug around as much weight.
I had to purchase this for a class last year, and found it extremely helpful in understanding the works included because of the detailed introductions and headnotes for each author. But when the class was done, I sold the book for the refund. Big mistake, because another class ended up requiring it this semester.
This book is the typical Norton Anthology. However, it's the binding, it kills me. The book is already falling apart and I treat it gingerly, not even putting it in a backpack. The first 100 or so pages are falling out.
